Cove Creek Fire Update – July 29, 2018

Summary: Yesterday, gusty outflow winds due to thunderstorms in the area caused very active fire behavior. Slopover occurred on the north section of the fire. As a result, Interstate 70 was shut down in both directions for several hours. Today, crews are continuing to suppress with direct line construction and will conduct burnout operations if conditions become favorable. Smoke may be visible from the surrounding areas.

Location: 7 miles east of the I-70/I-15 Interchange, near Shingle Creek in Sevier County

Jurisdiction: Beaver Ranger District, Fishlake National Forest

Cause: Lightning

Size: 1300 acres

Containment: 15%

Fire Behavior: Active, wind-driven, uphill runs

Structures: None

Fuels: Mixed conifer and mahogany timber stand with heavy component of dead and down

Closures: Temporary road closures are now in effect for the following areas:
