Spanish Fork, Utah, September 14, 2018 – The Pole Creek Fire, caused by lightning and reported on September 6, 2018 is located in the Nebo Loop area on the Spanish Fork Ranger District in Juab County.

With warm, dry, and exceptionally windy weather conditions in the past few days, the Pole Creek Fire has grown to 53,853 acres, and it is only 0% contained.  Again yesterday, the fire made a significant push to the north and east, forcing evacuation of hundreds of homes in Utah County and temporary closures on Hwy 89 and Hwy 6.  For public safety, due to rapid growth of the fire and extreme fire behavior, the Forest has closed numerous roads and trails on the Spanish Fork Ranger District.

Fire managers flew reconnaissance missions this morning to assess the fire. Weather permitting, heavy air tankers and scooper airplanes will drop retardant and water to slow the fire’s advance.  Meanwhile, hand crews, engines, and heavy machinery are actively engaged battling the fire on the ground.  More resources are in route to the fire today. A Type 1 Incident Command Team (Great Basin Team 1) is taking over command of the fire today.

Rapid fire growth to the north and east is expected to continue through Sunday, with forecast high winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures. Smoke will be visible from parts of the I-15, Hwy 6, and Hwy 89 corridors, Payson, Nephi and surrounding communities.
