Kamas, Utah– Fire personnel working on the lightning-caused Slate Fire observed increased fire activity due to continued high winds yesterday. The current fire size is 498 acres.
Yesterday, firefighters continued to construct containment lines on the north and northwest edge of the fire adjacent to the Slate Creek drainage. Helicopters were used on the northeast corner to prevent fire from establishing in the South Fork drainage. Crews will continue to work in both of these areas today. Firefighters will assess roads to create buffers as needed to reinforce containment. Firefighter and public safety will remain top priority.
This fire was reported on August 23, 2018 about 6 miles northeast of Kamas, 3½ miles north of Highway 150. The fire is actively burning in mixed-conifer and aspen forest.
Yellow Pine Trail (Trail #240) is closed. Smoke may be visible from Highway 40 and Highway 150 around the Slate Creek and Yellow Pine areas, especially in the late afternoon. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in place. Please do not report.
