CROOKED CREEK FIRE
FIRE INFORMATION UPDATE
July 22, 2018
Time: 8 a.m. Cause: Lightning
Size: 137 acres Percent Contained: 5%
Date Started: July 18, 2018 Location: East of Milburn, North of Fairview
Number of Personnel: 180
Resources: 4 Engines, 3 Hotshot Crews, 3 Type two Initial Attack Crews, 3 helicopters, 1 air attack, 1 water tender.
Cooperators: Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, USDA Forest Service
Yesterday: Firefighters were able to cut a sawline across the southeast flank of the Crooked Creek fire, where multiple fingers of the fire were difficult to access due to steep rugged terrain. They have also built handline across the north ridge, and are working to hold rolling logs and snags, which threaten to spread the fire. Short range spotting continues to challenge firefighters on the west flank. They were assisted by helicopters dropping water and retardant. Fire behavior fluctuates as cloud cover shades the fire area. Single tree torching and group torching occurs during periods with full sun and winds from adjacent thunder cells.
Today: Firefighters will work to secure the line they built on Saturday as they work to suppress the fire and protect structures. Storms and continued cloudiness may present a challenge as winds become erratic during afternoon thunderstorms. Firefighter and public safety remains the top priority of the Incident Management Team.
Current Closure Order: The Manti-La Sal National Forest has issued an order closing the fire area, Forest Roads 138, 1178, 1048, 1049; Forest Trail 0053 from the Forest Boundary to the junction with Forest Road 0138, Forest Trail 048 from the Forest Boundary to the junction with Forest Road 1178. The closure is in place to prevent potential injury to the public and for firefighter safety during fire operations. You can read the order at: https://go.usa.gov/xUn98
Safety: Everyone recreating in the area of Fairview, Milburn, South Skyline Drive and Fairview Canyon need to be aware of increased fire traffic. Travel cautiously throughout the area.
