Sheriff evacuates Huntington Canyon at Trail Mountain Fire

Increased fire behavior late this afternoon prompted Emery County Sheriff’s Office to begin evacuations along the Highway 31 corridor.  Huntington Canyon is currently closed from the Power Plant up to mile post 18.5 (the turnoff to Miller’s Flat).  Trail Canyon and all campgrounds between the two closures points are included in the evacuations.  Please avoid the area to allow emergency officials to safely and efficiently perform their duties.

At this time, the fire has not crossed Huntington Canyon Road.  Firefighters will remain working on the fire through the night.  This situation is still very active.  Emerging updates will be posted as information becomes available.

Poor humidity recovery is expected for tonight.  This may cause the fire to become more active earlier in the day tomorrow.  Additionally, a Red Flag Warning (an indicator to firefighters of the potential for large fire growth and erratic fire behavior) is forecast for tomorrow.  Above normal temperatures, low humidity, atmospheric instability, and increased winds are all expected to be a critical levels.

Closures:  In addition to the closure of Highway 31, the Manti-La Sal National Forest has closed Indian Creek Campground, Forest Trail 0051, and Forest Roads 0034, 2302, 2181, 2180, and 2182.
